El pasado 16 de octubre cruzamos una nueva frontera, la segunda que tachamos de nuestra lista juntos! 🙂

Entramos a tierras hondureñas sin tener del todo claro qué esperarnos del pequeño país centroamericano. La mayoría de viajeros que hemos conocido evitaban turistear por aquí y se limitaban a pasar rápido camino a la frontera con Nicaragua.

Pero nosotros queríamos darle un chance a Honduras, ¿por qué no? A menudo la gente habla sin saber o sin haber visitado el país. Las tasas de crimen son altas, es innegable, de hecho en 2012 Naciones Unidas puso en el mapa mundial la ciudad de San Pedro Sula, por ser la urbe más peligrosa del mundo. Pero no dejamos que esto nos quitase las ganas de visitar el país, así que para allá nos fuimos.

Así que con ganas de empaparnos de su cultura, llegamos a el Lago de Yojoa, un destino que poco a poco se está conociendo más en Honduras y que nos sirvió como punto intermedio donde parar un par de días y organizarnos antes de dirigirnos a la costa.

Dos días después llegamos a la Ceiba, en la costa caribeña, desde donde tomamos un ferry hasta Utila, una de las tres principales islas del Caribe hondureño.

Por primera vez en el viaje (sin contar el incidente de Santa Catalina) nos tocó agarrar las mochilas y dejar nuestro cámper atrás.

La idea era ir a Utila para sacarnos el segundo de los títulos de buceo de PADI, el Advanced. Ambos tenemos algo de experiencia y nos encanta bucear, por tanto buscamos un lugar donde ofrecían alojamiento y cursos de buceo. Encontramos uno que por 275$ incluía los cinco buceos reglamentarios, dos de regalo y tres noches de alojamiento. Un buen deal sin duda (Alton’s Dive Center).

Disfrutamos como niños bajo el agua, admirando el bonito coral caribeño, así como la fauna marina local… ¡Incluso nadamos con delfines! Una experiencia brutal.

Al final de nuestros días en Utila una tormenta comenzó a amenazar la zona, por tanto decidimos cambiar nuestro plan de visitar Cayo Cochinos – una isla de arena blanca y agua cristalina – y salir en el último ferry para evitar quedarnos atrapados en las islas (tampoco es que fuese un mal lugar para que nos quedásemos atrapados).

Tras hacer noche en la Ceiba, estábamos listos para poner rumbo a la tercera y última parada en Honduras: Copán, antigua ciudad maya e importante capital entre los Siglos V y IX.

Un destino muy recomendable que nos encantó y al que según nos contaban los locales, no llega tanto turismo. Paseamos por las ruinas durante una mañana entera, atentos a las explicaciones de nuestro guía e imaginando cómo debía ser la vida en ese mismo lugar unos 1500 años antes.

Además de las ruinas, Copán ofrece otras actividades al turista. Nosotros visitamos el Macaw Mountain Park, una reserva de aves tropicales que lleva rescatando y protegiendo todo tipo de aves centroamericanos desde hace unos cuantos años ya.

Además de rescatar aves preciosas, se encargan de volver a introducirlas en su hábitat natural. En Copán lo estaban haciendo con las guacamayas rojas, devolviéndolas a su lugar original, en  las mismas ruinas mayas, por donde vuelan a sus anchas.

Una visita diferente en la que pudimos interactuar con multitud de pájaros de todos los tipos y colores. Nos gustó especialmente el tucán, ¡qué animal más majestuoso!

Honduras nos sorprendió gratamente. Nos pareció un país muy bonito y con una gente muy amable dispuesta a ayudar al extranjero. En ningún momento sentimos inseguridad, aunque no pisamos ninguna gran ciudad como Tegucigalpa o San Pedro Sula.

Sin duda volveríamos ya que nos quedaron muchos lugares por visitar y aprovechamos para animar al que se lo esté pensando, pues como comentábamos, es un país que puede sorprender y mucho.

On the 16^th of October, we crossed a new border, the second one we crossed off our list together! 🙂

We entered Honduran lands without a clear idea of what to expect from the small Central American country. Most of the travelers we have met avoided visiting around here and they restricted themselves to cross the country quickly, on their way to the Nicaraguan border.

We wanted to give Honduras the benefit of the doubt, why not? Often people talk without really knowing or without having visited the country. The crime rates are high, it’s undeniable, and as a matter of fact, in 2012 the UN put on the map the city of San Pedro Sula, for being the most dangerous city of the world. But we didn’t let this stop us from visiting the country, so this is where we headed!

So eager to immerse ourselves in its culture, we arrived to the Lago of Yojoa, a destination that is beginning to be popular in Honduras and that served as a good spot to stop for a couple of days and organize ourselves before heading to the coast.

Two days later we made it to La Ceiba, on the Caribbean coast, from where we took a ferry to Utila, one of the principal islands of the Honduran Caribbean.

For the first time during our trip (without counting the incident in Santa Catalina) we had to pack our bags and leave our camper behind.

The idea was to go to Utila to pass PADI’s second level of certification, the Advanced Open Water Course. We both have some experience in diving and we love it, therefore we looked for a place where they offered accommodation and diving courses. We found one place that, for $275 included the five mandatory dives of the course, two fun dives and three nights of accommodation. No doubt, a good deal! (Alton’s Dive Center).

We enjoyed like kids in the water, admiring the beautiful Caribbean coral, as well as the local marine life…we even swam with dolphins! Super cool.

By the end of our stay in Utila, a storm was threatening to hit the area, which is why we decided to change our plans of visiting Cayo Cochinos – a beautiful white-sand and crystal clear water Island – and take the last ferry to avoid getting trapped on the islands (not that it would be a bad place to be trapped in).

After spending the night in La Ceiba, we were ready to head to the third and last stop in Honduras: Copán, ancient Maya city and important capital between the Vth and IXth centuries.

A highly-recommended destination that we loved and that, according to the locals, was not receiving that many tourists. We walked around the ruins a whole morning, paying attention to the explanations of our guide, and imagining how life must have been there about 1500 years earlier.

Besides the ruins, Copán has other activities to offer visitors. We visited the Macaw Mountain Park, a tropical bird reserve that has been rescuing and protecting all sorts of central American birds ever since quite some years already.

Besides rescuing beautiful birds, they are responsible for introducing them again, or for the first time, to their natural habitat. In Copán they were doing so with red Macaws, returning them to their original home, right at the Copán archeological site, where they can fly freely.

It was a different visit where we were able to interact with many birds of all kinds and colors. We particularly loved the Toucan, what a majestic animal!

Honduras surprised us in a positive way. It is a beautiful country with nice people that are always willing to help foreigners. Not one moment did we feel unsafe, even though we didn’t go to any big city such as Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula.

Without a doubt we will go back, since we left a bunch of stuff to visit on our list and we also take advantage of this post to encourage those who are still having doubts to go. As we commented, it’s a country that holds many surprises.
