En estos casi ocho meses en la carretera nos ha pasado de todo, especialmente con el cámper, parece que tiene un imán 😀

Aquí van cuatro anécdotas y momentos en los que casi nos quedamos sin cámper:

1- En Santa Catalina (Panamá) dejamos nuestra querida casita aparcada en el estacionamiento de un hostal. Una tarde se levantó de la nada un viento fuertísimo con lluvias torrenciales que hizo que parte del tejado del hostal saliese volando y aterrizase en pleno cámper.

Resultado: el lateral del cámper se abrió cual lata de sardinas, dejando una parte de su interior a la vista. Nos tocó esperar una semana a que lo arreglasen.

2- En Popoyo (Nicaragua) vivimos la tormenta tropical Nate, noveno huracán de la temporada de huracanes del Atlántico de 2017 y que dejó a su paso 35 muertos. El nivel del agua subió hasta tapar tres cuartos de la rueda del carro, en ese momento decidimos irnos en busca de un lugar más alto, pues no teníamos información sobre lo que ocurría.

Resultado: Por suerte el nivel del agua no subió más y pudimos recuperar el carro sin problemas. Desde entonces tenemos la luz del freno de mano y abs encendidas.

3- En la Laguna de Apoyo (Nicaragua) estábamos estacionados en la entrada de un hostal con unas vistas espectaculares. A eso de las 10 de la noche, y sin previo aviso, el tendido eléctrico que teníamos encima, empezó a lanzar chispas hasta que se incendió y rompió, cayendo en nuestro techo.

Resultado: Salimos disparados y en cuanto cortaron la luz movimos el cámper rápidamente. Después hubo aún más chispazos. Primera línea en una noche con fuegos artificiales.

4- El día que entramos al estado de Oaxaca en México lo hicimos por el este, concretamente por una población llamada Ventosa. Es conocida por su fuerte viento norte, pues existe un embudo natural entre las montañas que hace que pase el viento. El día que manejamos por la carretera, un fuerte viento norte azotaba la ruta. El cámper se movía tanto que teníamos que ir a 50km/h. En algún punto vimos algo volar por el retrovisor.

Resultado: El longboard, que llevaba siete meses en el techo, no aguantó tanta presión y debido al viento se rompió la cincha que lo sujetaba y éste salió volando hasta el carril contrario. Por suerte nada malo ocurrió, sólo se partió el tail en dos. Al llegar a un peaje le preguntamos al señor si aquello era normal, nos contó que a menudo vuelcan camiones por las fuertes rachas de viento.

Experiencias que por suerte hasta ahora, no han llegado a nada serio. ¡¡Ojalá y sigamos así!!

During these almost eight months on the road, a lot has happened, especially with the camper, it seems that it has some sort of magnet 😀

Following are four short stories of times when we almost lost the camper:

1- In Santa Catalina (Panama) we left our dear little house in the parking lot of a hostel. One afternoon, out of nowhere, a strong wind arose with torrential rainfall. Part of the roof of the hostel was blown away and then proceeded to hit and fall right on top of our camper.

Result: The left side of the camper was cut open like a can of tuna, which left part of the interior on display. We had to wait one week for it to be repaired.

2- In Popoyo (Nicaragua) we lived through tropical storm Nate, the ninth storm of the 2017 hurricane season which left around 35 people dead. The level of the water rose until it covered ¾ of our car tire. In that moment, we decided to leave in search for a higher spot since at the time, we didn’t have any information yet about what was happening.

Result: Luckily, the water level didn’t continue to rise and we were able to retrieve our car without any further issues. Since then, the handbrake and abs lights have been on.

3- At the Laguna de Apoyo (Nicaragua), we were parked at the entrance of a hostel with an amazing view. Around 10 o’clock at night, without previous notice, the electric cable that was above us started to produce sparks until it caught fire and broke, falling on our roof.

Result: we got out of the camper in panic and we moved the car as soon as they cut the power. Front row seats for a night of fireworks.

4- The day we arrived to the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, we through the East, specifically through a town called Ventosa. It’s known for the strong wind since there exists a natural funnel between the mountains that allows the wind to pass. The day we drove through that road, a strong wind blowing from the North struck the road. The camper was moving so much that we had to drive at 50km/h. At some point, we saw something fly away through the rearview mirror.

Result: The longboard, that had been on the roof for 7 months, couldn’t put up with that much pressure and due to the wind, the straps that were holding it down broke and it flew away to the other side of the road.  Luckily, nothing bad happened, the tail simply broke in two pieces. When we arrived at the next tollbooth we asked the guy if those windy days were normal and he told us that trucks are often knocked over on that road.

Experiences that, luckily until now, have not led to anything more serious. Hopefully it’ll stay this way!!
