Como no es oro todo lo que reluce, quisiéramos mostraros siete aspectos del #vanlife que no veréis en las redes sociales 😀

Since all that glitters is not gold, we would like to show you seven aspects of the #vanlife that you will not see on social media 😀

1- No siempre dormimos en lugares paradisíacos. We don’t always sleep in idyllic places.

Cualquier feed de una cuenta de Instagram con fotos de vanlife siempre muestra lugares paradisíacos. Si bien es cierto que al tener el tiempo libre y una casa a cuestas se puede llegar a lugares maravillosos, no todos los días dormimos en spots así.

En ocasiones nuestro próximo destino está demasiado lejos y tenemos que buscar un punto intermedio, o sencillamente queremos visitar un lugar en particular y no cuenta con ningún tipo de instalaciones, con lo cual no tenemos otra opción.

Son muchas las noches en las que dormimos en plena calle de ciudades, estacionamientos de supermercados, gasolineras o en el terreno de algún taller esperando a que llegue la pieza que necesitamos.

The Instagram feed of any vanlifer’s account will mostly show incredible camping spots. Although it’s true that with so much free time and our little house on wheels it’s easy to reach incredible spots, we don’t always sleep in those.

Sometimes, our next destination is simply too far away and we have to sleep somewhere in between and other times, if we want to visit a particular place and there are no facilities, we have no other choice.

Many are the nights that we’ve spent on city streets, supermarket parking lots, gas stations or in a mechanic’s shop waiting for a spare part for our car.

2- En ocasiones las duchas escasean. Proper showers are sometimes scarce.

Si las redes sociales permitiesen transmitir olores, más de una foto de vanlife apestaría :-D. No nos malinterpretéis, somos gente limpia, sin embargo en ocasiones es difícil encontrar un lugar donde poder ducharse. Especialmente cuando viajamos por ciudades, no siempre es sencillo bañarse cómodamente.

En nuestro caso somos bastante privilegiados y contamos con un pequeño baño dentro del cámper, aún así, en muchas ocasiones nos duchamos en plena calle con una garrafa de agua y en bañador.

Por suerte la mayoría del tiempo estamos en playas o cerca de cascadas, nuestras duchas mañaneras preferidas.

If Social Media allowed the transmission of smells, more than one vanlife picture wouldn’t smell so good :-D. Don’t get us wrong, we are very clean people! However, it can be hard to find a proper and comfortable shower, especially when we’re traveling through cities.

In our case, we have the privilege of having a small bathroom inside our camper and even then, we still sometimes shower in the middle of the street or out of a bucket and in our bathing suit.

Luckily, most of our time is still spent at the beach or near waterfalls, which are our favorite morning showers!

3- A veces toca gastar más de lo previsto. Sometimes you have to spend more than you intended too.   

Más vale haber ahorrado o tener algún tipo de ingreso durante un viaje así, y es que viajando en carro siempre surgen gastos imprevistos. Desde impuestos por cruzar fronteras, hasta multas o pequeñas reparaciones que juntándolas suponen un buen pellizco al final de mes.

It’s better to have saved or to have some kind of earning during a trip like this. The thing is, when you travel by car, there are always unexpected expenses. From taxes when crossing a new border to traffic tickets and small repairs; all of those small expenses put together can sum up to an important amount that can hurt at the end of the month.

4- Constante desorden en el cámper. Our camper is constantly messy. 

¿Ordenamos el cámper antes de hacer una foto del interior? La respuesta es sí.

Al igual que en el punto 2, quisiéramos hacer hincapié en que somos personas limpias y ordenadas :-D. Sin embargo, es muy frecuente que nuestro cámper esté patas arriba. El sofá recibe todo tipo de prendas, gadgets o incluso el frutero. Especialmente cuando estamos manejando, si queremos que algo no se caiga al suelo, el sofá es nuestro destino predilecto.

En cuanto al orden de los armarios, Meli es la que peca de más desordenada. Aunque ella se justifique diciendo que sus prendas abultan poco y se caen por sí solas.

Ni hablemos del suelo del cámper. Además de los litros y litros de agua que guardamos debajo de la mesa y el pelo de Meli que está por todas partes, la arena está casi siempre presente. En cuanto llegamos a la playa, es cuestión de segundos hasta que los granos de arena comienzan a invadir nuestra pequeña casa.

Do we clean up the camper before taking a picture? The answer is yes.

As already mentioned in aspect #2, we would like to insist on the fact that we are clean and organized people :-D. HOWEVER, it happens very often that our camper is upside down. Our sofa receives all sorts of objects, gadgets and even our fruit bowl. Particularly when we are driving, if we want some stuff not to fall,  the sofa is THE safe spot.

As to the organization of the closets, Meli is guilty of being the least organized. She justifies herself saying that her clothes does not hold up when they’re piled up, and that they fall off while we drive.

Let’s not even mention our floor. In addition to the many gallons of water we keep under our table and Meli’s hair everywhere, sand is almost always present. When we get to the beach, it’s only a matter of seconds until those little grains make their way into our tiny house.

5- No todo el mundo ve a esta clase de viajeros con buenos ojos. Not everyone has a good impression of us vanlifers.  

Así es amigos. A ojos de algunas personas, no somos más que perroflautas hippies que van deambulando por el mundo. ¡JA! En ocasiones nos ha tocado soportar miradas de desprecio al llegar a algún lugar o preguntar en un hotel si podríamos pernoctar en su estacionamiento.

Por suerte son más las personas que nos hemos encontrado fascinadas por la gente viajera que el contrario.

That’s the way it is friends. For some people, we aren’t more than hobos or hippies that wander around the world. We’ve had to endure some disapproving looks when arriving somewhere or when asking at a hotel reception if we can spend the night in their parking lot.

Luckily, there are waayy more people fascinated by the remote lifestyle than the ones that think we’re just lazy people that escape responsibilities by living on the road.

6- No siempre tenemos suerte con el clima. The weather does not always cooperate.

A pesar de que pueda parecer lo contrario, no siempre hace sol encima de Ohlavan. Son muchos los días de tormenta y lluvias.

Al hacer un viaje tan largo, es muy probable que te toquen épocas de lluvia, huracanes o inviernos. Así que sería recomendable llevar algo más a parte de chancletas y bañadores.

Although our Instagram feed might show the opposite, the sun doesn’t always shine on top of Ohlavan.  We get a lot of days of rain and thunder.

When you embark on such a long journey, it is highly likely that you spend some time traveling during the rainy season. Therefore, if you’re about so start your own adventure, we advise you to bring something more than flip flops and bathing suits.

7- La mitad del tiempo la pasamos solos. Half of the time, we travel alone.

Viajar en pareja es maravilloso, pero viajar en pareja y además con amigos lo es más. Hemos sido afortunados de conocer gente maravillosa en este viaje, sin embargo también hemos tenido semanas de viajar solos.

Cuando pasas 24h al día con tu pareja en un espacio tan reducido, a menudo se agradece la compañía de amigos con los que compartir experiencias, charlas y risas.

If traveling as a couple is wonderful, then traveling with your partner and friends is even better. We’ve been very lucky during our trip: we’ve met amazing people along the way and we’ve created unforgettable memories. However, we’ve spent countless weeks traveling alone.

When you spend 24 hours a day with your partner in such a reduced space, you often feel grateful for the company of friends to share stories, experiences and good times.

A pesar de estos aspectos quizás no tan bonitos del vanlife, no nos arrepentimos ni por un segundo de haber escogido este estilo de vida en esta etapa de nuestras vidas, forma parte de la experiencia.

Despite those not-so-glamourous aspects of the #vanlife, we’ve never -not even for one second- regretted choosing this lifestyle during this particular phase of our lives. It is all part of the experience.
